PHILADELPHIA–“The Defender Association of Philadelphia congratulates and welcomes Philadelphia’s new Police Commissioner, Danielle Outlaw.

“As Philadelphia’s Public Defender, our work has been a driving force behind renewed calls for more effective policing, particularly as it relates to law enforcement practices in the city’s black and brown neighborhoods. Mayor Kenney’s selection of the city’s first African American woman to this crucial position demonstrates a recognition of the need for reforms and improved relationships between Philly’s police officers and communities.

“The police play a pivotal role in ensuring that those accused of crimes are given a fair trial. The Defender Association welcomes the opportunity to share what we’ve learned from our expansive pool of police accountability data with our new police chief. We’re hopeful for a productive working relationship that will ensure that our justice system provides every Philadelphia citizen with the fairness, respect, and dignity they deserve.”

"Our (mostly Black and Brown) clients never get to present or argue a justification defense at a preliminary hearing. And they certainly do not get their cases dismissed based on a judge’s determination that there was a justification defense.

"Instead, our clients—all of whom are poor and almost exclusively Black and Brown people—have their cases held for trial, and they sit in jail for months awaiting their day in court. Going forward, certainly before this forum, Defender Association attorneys will be making the same arguments and demanding the same results."

She was a consistent and needed presence at every board meeting and provided invaluable input that has helped us shape our policies, priorities and values.

The new PDs were super inspiring and the office, in general, was amazing. Definitely a vibe and culture that so many offices should be envious of.

Got a chance to experience Philly a little bit. It was my first time in the city and it definitely has a real energy and character. D’alessandro’s was closed, but I did get to Ishkabibble’s…..Cheeseteak was excellent and the Gremlin drink was #BUSSIN.

Finally, got to catch an Eagle’s game on Thursday night. The rudeness of Philly fans was a bit overstated. As was the loudness…..Overall, I enjoyed it, but I’ll take the overall vibe of a Falcons game.

I will be back. Hopefully when I have fewer work obligations from back home filling up my evenings and nights.

Josh was an incredible leader and advocate. Among his many achievements was the establishment of the nation’s first Youth #ParticipatoryDefense Hub right here in Philadelphia. Any progress we’ve made toward reforming our juvenile justice system would not be possible without his efforts and leadership.

Few individuals—or organizations, for that matter—have positively impacted as many young lives as Josh Glenn. Though our thoughts and our hearts are with his family at this time, this is a loss for the entire city of Philadelphia. #youthjustice #criminaljusticereform #community
